Types of air freight options

Due to the inevitable changes occurring around the world and the need to quickly send and receive different items between countries, the airline industry has given rise to a new form of shipping: air freight.

Air freight is basically the loading of cargo that is divided into different categories to make boarding more manageable and easier. Some primary bases for categorizing air freight are:

  • Item type
  • What is the size of the item, in terms of the number of items in the shipment and the size, and,
  • The number of days or hours it takes for a shipment to reach the specified destination.

Remittances, on the other hand, are categorized as follows:

Household goods include artwork, furniture and other similar items carried primarily by household goods (HHG) carriers such as North American Van Lines and Bekins.

The "Express" category, on the other hand, includes personal items and small business goods that are often considered overnight shipments (or express shipments, express letters, and express shipments). These transports are carried out by transport companies such as FedEx Express, UPS and DHL.

Because most items that fall into this category are relatively small and typically weigh no more than a few pounds, they are usually delivered in the carrier's own packaging.

The level of service varies depending on the service provided by the carrier or the personal choice of the shipper. They normally travel by air and may be delivered the same day they are shipped to the carrier, or may take several days to travel.

Packages that are slightly larger and heavier than express items are considered parcels. This also applies to shipping boxes, regardless of the contents. Carriers such as UPS and FedEx Ground offer services for this type of freight. Orders cover most business-to-consumer items and services and generally do not exceed the 100 pound weight category. Because they are relatively small, they are usually delivered in their own packaging from the sender or carrier.

The types of services in this category also vary. However, various ground transportation modes can travel 500 to 700 miles per day in approximately three to four days, depending on the service provided by the shipper or the service option selected by the customer. These shipments do not always travel by air; instead, they are transported by road and rail.

Freight shipments cover the largest loads in the industry. It is divided into two broad categories, mainly: LTL freight larger than a truck and TL or truck freight.

Shipments that weigh less than a truckload are also called motor freight. They often cover most business-to-business transactions. Services range from transporting items weighing 100 pounds to items weighing as little as 15,000 pounds. Because LTL trailers are only 28 inches long, most air freight of this type cannot exceed this length.

Unlike smaller packages, shipments do not always come in corporate packaging.

Truck shipping includes larger shipments, from 15,000 pounds to 40,000 pounds, with a maximum length of 53 inches. This type of air freight differs from all other categories in that it usually does not stop during the journey and is not mixed with other shipments. Most are often organized through freight brokers and online marketplaces.

When taking advantage of this type of air freight, it is best to fully understand all terms covered, including claims, pricing and insurance.
